With the car’s high beams lighting the moor and my leather boots squishing through the heather and the mud, I started walking towards the witch’s tree. The cold surged up through my legs, along with something else that brought chills—the energy of the land and all its history.

“Good evening, Agent Rivera,” Miller’s booming voice called through the dark. There were wet grass stains on his pants from the knees down, like he’d been crawling around out here for a while. “It’s quite a surprise seeing you out on the moor.”

His auburn beard caught the glow of the headlights behind me.

“Whatcha looking for?” I asked, stepping close enough that I didn’t have to shout.

“My reading glasses,” he replied, rubbing his hands together. “It’s quite chilly out here tonight, isn’t it?”

“I guess so,” I slowly answered, not taking my eyes off of him for a second. Sure, the wind had picked up, but the frosty air wasn’t what made me bristle.

It was the fact that fae like us didn’t need reading glasses.

What was Miller really out here looking for?

I took a deep breath to keep my heartbeat calm and steady, then looked around Miller for any sign of my partner. All I could see was the older guy in front of me, and the witch’s tree in the near distance behind him.

“Where’s Logan?” I asked. “Have you seen him lately?”

“Agent Hawthorne? Oh, I suspect he’s getting ready for bed back at the hotel.”

“Nope. He left in a hurry and hasn’t come back. His phone’s not working, either.”

“I’m sorry to hear that, Agent Rivera. There’s nothing more I would like than to give you the answers you so desperately crave. But the truth is that I don’t know where Agent Hawthorne is. I thought he’d be with you.”

Looking deeply into his face, I tried to see if he was telling the truth. I didn’t want to accuse the guy of being a liar without any evidence, but something about him was setting me on edge.

“Since you’ve come all the way out here,” he smiled, and took a step closer to me, “would you like to see the place where Colin George went missing? We’re within a stone’s throw of it.”

“It’s probably better if I come back during the day,” I said while keeping my eyes pinned on his movements. “I really need to focus on finding my partner.”

“Nonsense,” Miller said, waving his hand in dismissal as he took a few more steps closer to me. I didn’t like the urgency in his voice, or the way his muscles were tensing up, as if he was about to pounce on me. “Hawthorne’s a grown man. He can take care of himself. Now, if you’ll just come with me, I can show you the exact location where—”

“Yeah, I appreciate that, but I’d better have the rest of my team take a look with us,” I said, and turned to wave my arms furiously at Carl and Katrina in the bright headlights. “Since it’s official business and whatnot.
